Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Sweep in Tampa: What to Know First

A HeatShield chimney sweep in Tampa mostly comes down to knowing how HeatShield’s refractory parging wears differently than clay tile or bare brick, and cleaning accordingly. We provide independent HeatShield service (we are not authorized by HeatShield, and do not claim to be), with most standard sweeps completed the same week you call. A typical sweep runs between $189 and $269, and we hand you a written price before anything gets dirty.

How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them

HeatShield is a poured-in-place refractory resurfacing system, typically applied over old clay tile or damaged masonry. It is a solid product when installed right. But it fails in ways specific to its chemistry and to Tampa’s climate, and a proper sweep has to account for that. Here is what we see in the field.

  • Cerfractory surface spalling from trapped moisture. HeatShield’s Cerfractory material is porous by design, but Tampa’s humidity means moisture can wick in and sit against the original clay tile behind it. When that moisture gets hot, it expands and causes surface spalling – small chunks of material breaking loose into the flue. We see this most often on HeatShield’s standard resurfacing jobs in older Seminole Heights bungalows. A careful sweep with poly brushes, not steel, removes the loose material without gouging the remaining surface.
  • Glazed creosote buildup on HeatShield’s smoother surface. HeatShield creates a smoother interior than rough masonry, which sounds good but changes how creosote forms. Instead of building up in the pores of clay tile, it forms a hard, glazed layer that resists standard brushing. This is common in fireplaces that burn mostly unseasoned oak or pine. We use a rotary whip system that removes the glaze without scraping the Cerfractory substrate underneath.
  • Casting cracks at the flue offset. HeatShield’s poured application sometimes creates a transition point where the flue changes direction, and that transition is where hairline cracks appear. These cracks collect soot and creosote faster than the rest of the flue, and they are easy to miss with an eyeball check. Our inspection includes a camera scan through the entire run, specifically looking at these transition zones.
  • Application voids in HeatShield’s original pour. We have found small voids or air pockets in the HeatShield pour itself on several Tampa jobs, particularly in homes where the original install happened during the rainy season. These voids become creosote traps. During a sweep we document every void we find with photos, so you know exactly what is there and whether it matters or can wait.
  • Smoke shelf and damper area buildup no one else checks. HeatShield liners run above the smoke chamber, and the average sweep focuses there. But the smoke shelf and damper assembly still get coated with sticky soot and creosote, and in a HeatShield fireplace that gunk can harden enough to make the damper stick or not seal fully. We clean that area every single time, not just when something is visibly wrong.

Our HeatShield Chimney Sweep Process

Every HeatShield job we do in Tampa follows the same sequence, so you are never wondering what happens next.

  1. 1
Call and book. A live person answers. You tell us what you have, when it was last swept, and what you are seeing. We give you a window, not a vague “sometime next week.”
  2. 2
Arrival and floor prep. Shoe covers go on at the door. Drop cloths go down around the fireplace and the path to the truck. Nothing gets moved without asking first. If your kids are asleep or the dog is pacing, we work quietly or work around them.
  3. 3
Camera inspection before the brush touches anything. We run a camera through the flue to document the current condition of your HeatShield liner, including any cracks, voids, or spalled areas from the list above.
  4. 4
Written price confirmation. If the camera shows something that changes the scope – a glazed creosote layer that needs the rotary whip instead of a standard brush – you get a written revised price before we proceed. No surprises at the invoice.
  5. 5
The sweep itself. We use poly brushes on HeatShield liners, never steel, and we clean the smoke shelf and damper assembly as standard. Pet-safe products are used where there is a choice.
  6. 6
Post-sweep camera scan and clean-up photo. We run the camera again so you can see the before and after. Then we photograph the clean-up before we leave. That photo is part of the Cedarwell Care Promise, and it is on every single job.

What HeatShield Chimney Sweep Costs in Tampa

Most standard HeatShield chimney sweeps in Tampa run between $189 and $269. That includes the pre-sweep camera inspection, the sweep itself, the smoke shelf and damper clean-out, and the post-sweep scan with photos.

If the flue has glazed creosote that needs a rotary whip, expect to add $80 to $120 for the extra time and tooling. If we find hairline cracks or spalled sections during the inspection and you want them addressed, we will give you a separate written price for the repair – and we will be honest about whether it can safely wait until next season. There is no obligation to do repair work the same day, ever.

Every estimate is free, and every price is written down before work begins. Call (850) 290-0897 and we will get you a number that does not move.

Why Tampa Homeowners Call Kindling Chimney Tampa for HeatShield Work

We work to a written care promise on every visit. That means the shoe covers, the drop cloths, the camera inspection, the photo of the clean-up, and the exact price are all in writing before the crew rings the bell. If it is not done right, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and make it right. No fine print, no phone tag.

Danny Cortes, our owner, spent two years at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College learning flue construction and exhaust safety before he ever put a brush in a chimney, and he has been at this for going on nineteen years. He still walks every homeowner through the camera feed before writing up a single line on an invoice, because no one should pay for work they do not yet understand.

We also sweep and repair chimneys with DuraFlex and Gelco liners, so if your HeatShield flue ever needs a section replaced and a different brand is the honest better fit for the job, we will tell you that instead of forcing a patch. Know what is in your chimney before you light the first fire of the season – that is the whole job, right there.
