Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

We install HeatShield chimney caps and HeatShield-compatible caps throughout Tampa, and most installations run between $340 and $620 installed, depending on your flue size and roof access. We keep common sizes on the truck, so if your measurements match what we carry, the job is done in a single visit. Most Tampa homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a rusted cap that leaks into the firebox during a summer downpour, or a cap that has simply detached from the flue tile and is sitting crooked at the roofline.

Which HeatShield Models This Applies To

The tricky thing about HeatShield is that the brand is better known for its flue lining systems than for cap hardware. Most “HeatShield” caps that customers ask us about are actually the termination caps that sit on top of HeatShield ceramic or HeatShield-flex liner systems. The cap’s mounting collar must match the outside diameter of the liner, not the clay flue tile around it. That is the number one compatibility gotcha we see in Tampa: someone orders a cap for a 13″ × 13″ clay tile, but their HeatShield liner is an 8″ or 9″ round stainless application, and now nothing fits.

When you call us, here is what we ask: Is the cap round or square? What is the inner diameter of the liner it sits on? And if you can read it, is there a part number etched on the collar? HeatShield caps come in round sizes, typically 6″, 7″, 8″, 9″, and 10″ (and oddball larger ones for fireplace inserts), while an OEM rectangular multi-flue cap is less common in this brand. We can match most of these. But we tell every Tampa customer the same thing: if your cap needs a custom adapter or the mount is in bad shape, a quality aftermarket equivalent from Gelco or Copperfield lands at about the same quality and often the same warranty coverage, for less waiting. We install HeatShield genuine parts when that is what the job calls for, and we are happy to show you the difference on the quote.

We are an independent chimney service company. We are not affiliated with HeatShield, and we do not act as their warranty processors. What we are good at is matching the right part to the exact liner and flue opening so it actually sheds water, keeps out birds, and stays put in Tampa’s summer thunderstorms.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox or a musty smell after a storm. This is the big one in Tampa. Our afternoon thunderstorms test a cap faster than anything. If you smell damp soot or see water beads on the firebrick after a heavy rain, the cap is not shedding water away from the flue opening, or the seal between the cap collar and liner has separated.
  • The cap looks crooked or lifted at the roofline. Strong wind and driving rain eventually work the mounting screws loose, and once the cap lifts even half an inch, water runs straight down the outside of the liner and into the smoke shelf. It does not take a hurricane; a normal summer squall over Tampa Palms or Carrolwood does it.
  • You hear birds or animals inside the flue. A missing or rusted damper screen is the entry point. We have removed nests from caps all around Tampa neighborhoods. The mesh on a HeatShield cap rusts out before the hood does, and once there is a hole, anything that fits through it gets in.
  • Rust bleeding down the roof or on the cap itself. HeatShield caps are designed to resist rust, but nothing survives forever in Tampa’s salt air and humidity, especially within a few miles of the bay. If you see rust stains below the cap on your shingles, the collar or hood is failing and needs a replacement before the rust travels to the liner.
  • Smoke or draft issues that come and go with the weather. A cap that has partially collapsed or is packed with debris narrows the flue opening, which changes your draft. If the fireplace pulls fine on one day and smokes the living room the next, the cap is often the first thing we check.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For most Tampa homes, a HeatShield-compatible cap installation lands between $340 and $620 installed. The part itself, depending on size and brand, runs roughly $120 to $290. The labor covers getting two techs on the roof safely, removing the failed cap, cleaning the flue throat where the old seal was, reinstalling the new cap with proper mechanical fasteners, and sealing the base so it does not leak at the collar.

What drives the range is roof access and flue type. A single-story ranch in Brandon with an easy roof pitch stays on the low end. A steep two-story roofline near Davis Islands with a higher, tile-lined chimney pushes toward the top. If your flue needs anything beyond the cap, you will see it in writing first. That written price comes before we start, always, just like our job clean-up promise: shoe covers and drop cloths go down before we walk in, and a photo of the cleaned-up work area is taken before we leave. This is what we mean when we talk about the Cedarwell Care Promise, and it is included on every Tampa job we do.

If the work is not right, Kindling Chimney Tampa makes it right. That is not fine print. That is the 365-Day Done Right Promise on your invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

We are honest about this: if you are comfortable on a ladder and all you want to do is confirm the cap is failing, you can inspect it from the ground level. Check for rust, check whether it is crooked, look for missing mesh. That is useful information to have before you call, and it helps us quote more accurately over the phone at (850) 290-0897.

But the actual installation should be left to a professional. You are on the roof, working over a flue, dealing with fasteners that have been baked and rusted for years. A bad fall from a roof is the kind of injury that changes a family’s life. And we have lost count of the number of Tampa calls we take from homeowners who tried the DIY swap, only to find the cap does not fit the liner the way they expected, and now they have a partially mounted cap and water coming through. By the time we arrive, the cost is higher than if we had swapped it from the start. Let us save you that. Sean and the crew will match the part, mount it right, and leave everything the way we found it.
